Nicola Zingarelli Photographer
I started taking pictures just to complement my first articles in an Italian fishing magazine that no longer exists. This was happening almost 20 years ago and those images were pretty horrible. For some time I kept doing it the same way, no major interest in the quality of the shots themselves, just in showing how big were the fish I was catching.
Once I moved to Spain from Italy I started taking it a tad more seriously. Switched to slides (!) and to my first Nikon reflex, I think it was a F60 with a kit lens. Since my memory doesn't allow me to remember with any kind of accuracy any date, I will say that I slowly got more and more interested in this art. The Provia 100 showed up in my bag quickly followed by Velvia 50 and later 100. I abandoned the scene modes to peacefully venture in the world of P, A, S. Manual was still too tough for me, and a bit more water needed to flow under the bridges before I could venture into that world.
Finally, with the digital era, myself as other 300 millions people discovered how easy was to become a "photographer", with the LCD showing us in real time how bad our pictures were. What a magical time. To support the recenlty bough F65 I first had a Nikon 4300 which eventually drowned in a small river of Spain. Then came a D70s and the second point and shoot, a tad more advanced, a Nikon 5400 who went underwater along the shore of Ascension Island. Big rough wave! The immediate response of the digital cameras helped me a lot improving my style, and to upgrade, yet not to retire the D70s, I bought myself a D80, which I still love and use. I stuck with Nikon for many different reasons, and never regret. Just waiting for the right camera to come to change the whole lot and maybe turn to the FX format. I use a bunch of different lenses like Nikkor 18-200VR 3.5/5.6 (all terrain, very handy and useful), Nikkor 60mm micro f2.8 (great, sharp!), Nikkor 35mm f2 (low light master), Nikkor 10.5 fisheye f2.8 (fun lens) and Sigma 10-20mm 3.5/5.6 (I love this super wide angle). My stuff travels in one Pelicase 1450 or 1510 or in a more comfortable Power Pro Sling Shot 200. Being most of the time close, on top or in the middle of saltwater it is a priority for me to keep the gear as dry as I can, thus the Pelicase. I have always been sharing my time between fishing and taking pictures and the former was my main occupation, now step by step, I'm spending more time behind the viewfinder than casting poppers or dropping jigs.
At the moment I'm supplying my images and writings to several fishing magazines around the world:
Sport Fishing (USA)
Marlin Magazine (USA)
Voyages de Pèche (France)
Blinker (Germany)
La Pesca Mosca & Spinning (Italy)
Pesca & Barcos (Spain)
Federpesca (Spain)
Federpesca Mar (Spain)
Plus I work on assignments and my photos are available for sale worldwide.
My business is 100% related to fishing through my website www.caranx.net (with a very active fishing forum in English, Spanish and Italian) and the specialist shop on-line. I have been participating in special reportages for the Outdoor cable TV, CAZA Y PESCA in
